Dr. Winkler is Chair of Orthopedics at the Medical University of Vienna (MedUni Vienna). Since May 2026, he has served as Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at MedUni Vienna and University Hospital Vienna, as well as Head of the Division of Orthopedics. Prior to joining MedUni Vienna, he held the Professorship in Regenerative Orthopedics and Traumatology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Berlin Institute of Health.


Dr. Winkler studied Human Medicine at the University of Vienna, graduating in 2002. During his studies, he conducted research on nerve regeneration at the University Clinics of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Following his military service, he earned his PhD from the Medical University of Vienna in 2007.


Before returning to Vienna, Dr. Winkler was Head of the Clinical Department for Advanced Therapies at the Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery of Charité Berlin. His research at the Julius Wolff Institute and the Berlin Institute of Health Center for Regenerative Therapies focused on translating advanced therapies into clinical applications for musculoskeletal diseases.


Since 2017, Dr. Winkler has coordinated the EU-funded HIPGEN consortium, a multinational project developing cell therapies for muscle trauma. Since 2022, he has also coordinated the Horizon Europe PROTO consortium, which focuses on developing cell therapies and immunomodulatory biomechanical interventions for osteoarthritis.


Dr. Winkler is internationally recognized for his expertise in regenerative orthopedics, translational medicine, and advanced cell therapies, with a strong focus on bringing innovative musculoskeletal treatments from the laboratory to clinical practice.
